The volume contains invoices pasted in roughly chronologically, latest to earliest, documenting purchases made by R. E. Peabody & Co. from August 7, 1873 to April 16, 1874 from businesses in Montpelier, Plainfield, Waterbury, and Newbury, Vermont, Woodsville, New Hampshire, and Boston, Massachusetts. While some of the purchases relate to the sawmill, others, such as the purchase a silver watch and silver boot buttons. As well, he appears to have purchased much crockery and other household goods, perhaps setting up a boarding house for workers in the sawmill. Included with the receipt book are five letters, one written by Richard's father, Richard W. Peabody, telling of the improvement in Richard's mother's health, two chatty letters by J. W. Richards, one written while living in Boston and the other while traveling to Chicago, and two short letters by Charles K. Walker, superintendent of water works in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Richard Ezra Peabody was born on October 5, 1851, the son of Richard W. and Hannah (Parker) Peabody, in Coventry, Vermont. By 1871, he was living in the vicinity around Groton, Vermont, perhaps working on the Montpelier Wells Railroad, as his occupation is listed as Civil Engineer.
